DUTIES OF BOARD MEMBERS

 

 

The members of the Lafayette Parish School Board shall have authority only when acting as a School Board legally in session.  The School Board shall not be bound in any way by any action or statement on the part of any individual Board member except when such statement or action is in pursuance of specific instructions from the School Board.

 

No Board member, by virtue of his/her office, shall exercise any administrative responsibility with respect to the schools or as an individual command the services of any employee of the School Board.

 

The general duties and obligations of an individual School Board member may be enumerated as follows:

 

  1. To familiarize himself/herself with school law, regulations of the Louisiana Department of Education, School Board policies and administrative regulations and procedures;

  2. To have a general knowledge of educational philosophy, aims and objectives of the system;

  3. To work harmoniously with other School Board members without trying to either dominate the School Board or neglect his/her share of the work;

  4. To vote and act in the School Board meetings impartially for the good of the district;

  5. To represent the School Board and the School District to the public in such a way as to promote both interest and support;

  6. To follow all school rules for visitors to campuses, including signing in at the office and notifying the school administration of his/her visit;

  7. To refer complaints to the proper school authorities and to abstain from individual counsel and action;

  8. To act ethically in all matters at all times thereby representing the School Board and School District to the best of one's ability; and

  9. To evaluate the Superintendent annually.

 

INFORMATION REQUESTED BY BOARD MEMBERS

 

Information requested by a School Board Member relating to any matter concerning the Lafayette Parish School Board shall be provided within three (3) business days of the time of the request.  If the information cannot be provided within three (3) business days, then written notification shall be provided the Board Member who made the request as to the reason(s) why said information cannot be provided.  Requests made of the Superintendent’s Office via telephone shall be confirmed via email immediately after receipt with a short description of the request and the date and time received.  Written requests shall be dated and signed for by the recipient, a copy shall be made of the request, and the original shall be returned to the Board Member.

 

Requests may also be made directly to the departments by individual Board Members.  The Board member requesting information shall notify the Superintendent of the petition for information.

 

All information requested by an individual School Board member shall be provided to all School Board members.
