Board President Britt Latiolais and Superintendent Francis Touchet  asked the public to keep police officer Segus Jolivette and his family in prayer.  Officer Jolivette previously served as a School Resource Officer in Lafayette Parish and he also served as a security officer at different after school activities.  Mr. Touchet commended Mrs. Janine LaFleur, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction and her academic team for organizing a successful first day of professional development for teachers.  He also commended the teachers that are attending the professional development sessions to make sure they are getting ready for the students to return.  Mr. Touchet also recognized the Board for adopting Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) Model for two Lafayette Parish Schools at the March Regular Board Meeting.  Superintendent Touchet noted that school will begin in a week with a staggered start.  By Monday, August 12, 2024 all students would be in attendance.

Superintendent Touchet informed the public that the December Board Meeting would be moved from December 4th to December 11, 2024.

 

Information: 2.3 EMPLOYEE SERVICES: Lafayette Parish School System's First Cohort of REACH University Graduates - N. Walker

Nicky Walker, Diversity and Equity Talent Coordinator, explained that REACH University is an accredited, non-profit institution offering job-embedded bachelor degrees and teaching certificates for school employees, specifically paraeducators.  REACH University is a full time online program with classes being offered in the evenings and REACH students pay no more than $75 a month for tuition.  Ms. Walker recognized the first 4 graduates for receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts.: Jalisa Anderson, Kelley Burns, Loukou “Amelia” Attey, and Mary Dugas.  The graduates were paraeducators for the 2023-24 school year in Lafayette Parish.  At the time of the meeting, three of the four graduates will be teaching for the upcoming school year.

Information: 2.5 FINANCE: Notice of Public Meeting to announce intent to call for an election to authorize renewal or continuation of an ad valorem tax - Dugas/Mouton

Board President Britt Latiolais read the following announcement:

Notice is hereby given that at its meeting to be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. at its regular meeting place, the Board Room, 202 Rue Iberville, Lafayette, Louisiana, the Parish School Board of the Parish of Lafayette, State of Louisiana, plans to consider adopting a resolution ordering and calling an election to be held in Consolidated School District No. 1 of the Parish of Lafayette, State of Louisiana, to authorize the renewal or continuation of an ad valorem tax therein.

 

Mr. Latiolais requested Robert Gautreaux, Director of Construction, Facilities and Maintenance, provide the Board with an update on projects at various facilities.  Mr. Gautreaux presented to the Board a powerpoint presentation of pictures of improvements to schools in all nine districts.
