Superintendent Touchet reflected on the March 1st incident that took the life of a Carencro High student.  Safety measures have been put in place at schools, but there is still more work to be done to ensure that students return home safely.  Superintendent Touchet thanked staff, bus drivers, social workers and counselors and the community for coming together.  The staff of Lafayette Parish School System is committed to safety and safety is a priority moving forward.  Students will always be put first and we will make sure we are fiscally responsible with taxpayers dollars.

Information: 2.1 BOARD:Milton Elementary/Middle School's Jazzin Jackets - Hidalgo/Smith-Mason

Board Member Jeremy Hidalgo introduced Milton’s first ever dance team for the school - Jazzin Jackets.

 

Information: 2.2 BOARD: Impact of charter schools to Lafayette Parish School System - Mason/Latiolais

Board Member Hannah Mason shared information that showed how much tax dollars went to charter schools in the area and the prediction is enrollment will grow next year.  Matthew Dugas,  Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, explained the MFP funding that is based on student enrollment that the district receives from the state.  The district loses MFP funding for students who enroll in charter schools.

 

 

Information: 2.3 BOARD: Recognition of the Acadiana High School FFA Dairy Show Team - LeJeune

Board Member David LeJeune recognized Acadiana High School’s FFA Dairy Show Team for the awards the students received at the Lafayette Parish, District and State Show Results.  Mr. Curtis Oubre, Club Sponsor, gave information on how Acadiana High’s Dairy Show Team started.  Acadiana High is the only school in the state that has “show cows” on the school campus.

NATIONAL SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK WEEK

Sponsored by School Social Work Association of America

 

WHEREAS, the importance of school social work through the inclusion of school social work programs and services has been recognized in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 6301 et seq.) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (20 U.S.C. 1400 et seq.);

WHEREAS, school social workers are exceptionally skilled in providing services to students who face serious challenges to school success, including disability, poverty, discrimination, abuse, neglect, mental illness, homelessness, bullying, familial stressors, and other barriers to learning;

WHEREAS, school social workers are needed more now than at any time in recent memory, as more students are struggling with mental and behavioral health disorders, with nearly 1 in 6 children from 2 to 8 years old (17.4 percent) having a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder;

WHEREAS, individuals who wish to access community mental health services often find such services unavailable, inaccessible, or inadequate;

WHEREAS, school-based mental health programs are critical to early identification of and early intervention for mental health problems;

WHEREAS, school social workers, being licensed mental health professionals in schools in the United States, provide necessary assessment, interventions, counseling, family outreach, and community referrals;

WHEREAS, school social workers maintain knowledge of school culture and school climate which are necessary for responsible school safety planning;

WHEREAS, fewer than 1 in 5 children in need of mental health services actually receive these services, and research indicates that school mental health programs improve educational outcomes by decreasing absences, dropout rates, and discipline referrals, while improving academic achievement;

WHEREAS, school social workers serve as vital members of a school’s education team, playing a central role in creating partnerships between the home, school, and community to ensure student academic success; and

WHEREAS, the celebration of “School Social Work Week” during the week beginning March 3, 2024, highlights the vital role school social workers play in the lives of students in the state of Louisiana:

2024 TEACHER PAY RAISE RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, in June 2023, it was found in the Louisiana Department of Education’s “Teacher Recruitment and Retention Compensation Study” that "the percent of current teacher positions filled by teachers certified in-field – is only 69%” and that the wage penalty experienced by teachers choosing the profession in Louisiana is 27.8% and wages of many Louisiana education support professionals wages fall below the federal poverty level; and

WHEREAS, our nation’s future well-being relies on a high-quality public education system staffed by well compensated, certified teachers and qualified support staff to prepare all students for college, careers, democracy, and lifelong learning; and

WHEREAS, teacher quality is one of the biggest school-based factors on student achievement; and

WHEREAS, educational support professionals provide essential services to both other educators and students that allow them to function and achieve at high levels; and

WHEREAS, educators deserve to be recognized for their tireless devotion to the promotion of the current and future wellbeing of our students and communities;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lafayette Parish School Board joins the National Education Association, Louisiana Association of Educators, and Lafayette Parish Association of Educators in their support for the passage of permanent and equitable pay raises for teachers and support staff of at least two thousand dollars in the 2024 regular Louisiana Legislative Session.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution shall be transmitted to our Governor, and to all members of the Louisiana Senate and House of Representatives.

WHEREAS, School Breakfast Week combined with National Nutrition Month has admirably served our nation for more than 50 years; and,

 

          WHEREAS, The School Breakfast Program was permanently established in 1975; and

 

WHEREAS, all school nutrition programs are dedicated to the health and well-being of our nation’s children; and,

 

WHEREAS, food is the substance by which life is sustained and learning abilities in and

out of the classroom increase substantially; and,

 

WHEREAS, the type, quality, and amount of food that individuals consume each day

plays a vital role in their overall health and physical fitness; and,

 

WHEREAS, there is evidence for continuing nutrition education and a wide-scale effort to

enhance good eating practices; and,

 

WHEREAS, there is a need for awareness of the value of all school nutrition programs; now,

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lafayette Parish School Board does hereby support the month of March as National Nutrition Month AND National School Breakfast Week, March 4-8, 2024, and encourages our administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, students, and all other community members to join the campaign and become aware and concerned about their children’s and their own nutritional habits, in hope of achieving a more healthful citizenry for today and the future.
