Superintendent Trosclair gave the Board updates on the following:
First Day of School for 2020-21: I am pleased to report that we have had a very successful first day of school for all A & B students. I, alongside our district staff, have been touring school campuses providing support to our administrators. Our school staff are well prepared, and everything ran smoothly. It was great to see students excited about their return to learning. All of the work and preparation of our employees is clearly evident and reports from across the district were positive.
I would like to thank our schools that organized clean-up days with the support of their parents and community partners. We are grateful for the many hours you all spent improving our campuses at Ovey Comeaux High School and Broussard Middle School.
LPSS is welcoming evacuees and new students to the district that have been displaced due to Hurricane Laura. Registration is at the Vermilion Conference Center (VCC) located at 326 Gauthier Road between the hours of 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday.
Reminders for parents: Next week, students in grades 1-5 will report to school daily, students in grades pre-k and kindergarten will attend school using the A/B schedule along with our 6-12th grade students. The September reporting calendar and additional up-to-date information can be found on our website and social media.
For our Lafayette Online Academy students and for the days students are not attending school in-person, families can opt to order “Meals-to-Go” in advance to take home for the coming week. These are shelf-stable breakfast and lunch meals that parents must order via an online form by midnight each Wednesday for pickup on Friday. Families with more than one student enrolled in different LPSS schools will be able to pick up meals at a single school site.
We are asking all parents to update their Parent Portal account with a valid email address. This is a mandatory requirement for LOA parents as this is how the online academy will communicate with families, which began the orientation and onboarding process this week. We ask parents to be patient as we continue to roll out the necessary information over the course of this week in order to prepare families to begin online coursework on September 14, 2020.
Link and Learn Help Desk: We are excited to announce that the Lafayette Parish School System and Love Our Schools Link & Learn Help Desk is now live and operational. The help desk was created to assist parents and students with all questions and concerns related to internet connectivity, device usage and educational apps. Ashley Hebert, Representative of the American Heart Association, shared information with the Board regarding water bottle filling stations for future new construction in the schools. Discussion for consideration by the Board to include in all future building renovation projects and new construction projects the installation of water bottle filling stations on drinking fountains as follows: (1. A minimum of two (2) water bottle filling stations in each school facility; (2. A minimum of one (1) water bottle filling station on each floor and wing of each new school building constructed; (3. A recommendation to install one (1) water bottle filling station in each gymnasium, cafeteria and high traffic commons areas.
