The Superintendent congratulated four schools receiving Cox Communication grants.  These school grants were awarded to: Carencro Heights Elementary, Katherine Drexel Elementary, Woodvale Elementary, and Southside High School.  He also thanked Cox Communication for their partnership with LPSS.

The Superintendent thanked the Comeaux High Performing Arts students for providing music for the Board meeting.  He also thanked everyone who participated in the “Wear Blue” fundraiser in honor of Corporal Michael Middlebrook. A total of $19,385 was raised and donated to the family.

Resolution: That the Board authorize staff to award the low bid and alternate #1 to Bernhard Mechanical for $1,284,000 for the Broussard Middle, E.A. Martin Middle and Youngsville Middle Gymnasium Air Conditioning project in accordance with Louisiana Public Bid Law and purchasing procedures and guidelines.

Corrected Motion: That the Board authorize the Superintendent to enter into a contract with Fleet Rite for fuel purchases for buses and other Lafayette Parish School System vehicles contingent on Fleetrite being able to offer contract pricing terms of "Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) plus $.10 cents" at a majority the higher utilized fueling stations that are currently being utilized.

That the Board authorizes the Superintendent to negotiate a contract with Fleet Rite for fuel purchases for buses and other Lafayette Parish School System vehicles contingent on Fleetrite being able to offer contract pricing terms at least 30 fueling stations.

That the Board approves a budget revision for an annual transfer out, beginning in fiscal year 2017 - 2018, of an amount equal to .5 Mills of Property Tax (approx. $1,083,000) from the General Fund to the School Site Renovations/Construction Account in the Self-Funded Construction Fund with an offsetting increase of $216,000 to Sales Tax Revenues and $867,000 to MFP Revenues.

Employees may also communicate information, thoughts and concerns directly with and to Board members, and no system administrator shall attempt to prohibit, by word, threat, or implication, them from doing so. Employees who communicate with Board members or the Superintendent in an orderly and constructive manner and in good faith shall not be the subject of disciplinary action as a result of such communication.

Resolution: That the Board approve Resolution 10-17-1916 proclaiming October 2017 as Educational Diagnosticians' Month.

RESOLUTION 10-17-1916

   WHEREAS, children have a natural desire and propensity to learn, and it is imperative to adequately support the needs of children and youth; and

   WHEREAS, children have a right to a high quality education that meets their individual needs; and

   WHEREAS, children’s mental health is closely linked to their successful learning and development, and schools must apply sound psychological principles to instruction and learning, cultivate children’s intellectual, social and emotional development, and promote prevention and early intervention; and

   WHEREAS, schools must ensure a safe, healthy environment for all children and be able to recognize and respond to their emotional, psychological diagnostic needs, including those caused by a crisis; and

   WHEREAS, educational diagnosticians are specially trained to help parents and educators identify and reduce risk factors, create effective and caring schools, access helpful community resources and implement research-driven prevention and intervention strategies to foster healthy child development and academic success; and

   WHEREAS, during Louisiana Educational Diagnosticians’ Month, we recognize the vital role that Educational Diagnosticians play in the personal and academic development of Louisiana’s children,

   THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lafayette Parish School Board hereby proclaims October 2017, as

EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSTICIANS’ MONTH

The Lafayette Parish School System supports and maintains Educational Diagnosticians in all schools.
