The School Board of the Parish of Lafayette, State of Louisiana, met in regular session at its meeting place, the Lafayette Parish School Board Administrative Building, Board Room, Lafayette, Louisiana, on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 5:30 P.M. pursuant to notice given in writing to every member.

I.          MEETING OPENINGS

The meeting was called to order by LaCombe and opened with a prayer by Trahan.  Babineaux led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

The Superintendent congratulated the Teachers of the Year and thanked them for the work they do, and  the credit they bring to the school system.

A.         INFORMATION REPORT

 

1.         Bullying

 

At the request of a Board Member, Nelda Broussard, Director of Census, Student Behavior, and Health Services informed the Board that both of the Director of Schools had been meeting with school administrators sharing with them the many resources that are available to help them deal with bullying on campuses.  She also informed the Board of the LPSS Safe School Policy that is online along with the discipline matrices that shows the infractions and consequences.

 

2.         David Thibodaux Career and Technical High School

 

Billy Guidry, Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, informed the Board that a Board Workshop had been scheduled for October 14th to discuss potential sites, estimated cost, and funding sources for the high school.

 

B.         INTRODUCTION ITEMS

 

1.         LSU Agricultural Center and Lafayette Parish School System "Memorandum of Understanding".  Action to be taken at a subsequent meeting.

 

2.           Approval of the Revisions to Policy File: GBRI - Professional Personnel Personal Leaves And Absences (For Illness And Emergencies).  Action to be taken at a subsequent meeting.

 

3.         Approval of the Revisions to Policy File: GCRG - Non-Certificated Support Personnel Leaves and Absences (Leave for Personal or Family Illness and Emergencies).  Action to be taken at a subsequent meeting.

11.       Resolution 10-10-1700-National School Lunch Week

That the Board adopt Resolution 10-10-1700 – National School Lunch Week.

 

RESOLUTION 10-1-1700

 

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK

 

WHEREAS, The National School Lunch Program has served our nation admirably for over 60 years through advanced practices and nutrition education; and, 

 

WHEREAS, the National School Lunch Program is dedicated to the health and well-being of our nation’s children; and,

 

WHEREAS, the National School Lunch Program has been joined through the years by many other excellent child feeding programs; and there is evidence of continued need for nutrition education and awareness of the value of school nutrition programs; and,

 

WHEREAS, the week of October 11-15, 2010 is National School Lunch Week; now,

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lafayette Parish School Board encourages all residents to become aware and concerned about their children’s and their own nutrition habits, in hope of achieving a more healthful citizenry for today and the future.

12.       Resolution 10-10-1701 Acadian Heritage Week (Semaine D'Heritage Acadien)

That the Board adopt Resolution 10-10-1701 Acadian Heritage Week (Semaine D'Heritage Acadien).

 

RESOLUTION - 10- 10-1701

 

To recognize the second week of October as Acadian Heritage Week (Semaine D'Heritage Acadien) in celebration of the valuable contributions Acadian people have made to the culture of the state of Louisiana.

 

WHEREAS, after being expelled from their homes in maritime Canada during the second half of the eighteenth century, many Acadians made their way to south Louisiana, where their descendants have formed the cornerstone of the state’s Cajun life and culture; and,

 

WHEREAS, throughout many generations, Acadian people have maintained their unique and colorful heritage along with their culinary and musical traditions; and,

 

WHEREAS, Acadian traditions, customs, and culture have contributed to and have become an integral part of the heritage of the state of Louisiana; and,

 

WHEREAS, the distinctive personality, lifestyle, and cultural contributions of Acadian people should be acknowledged and celebrated; and,

 

WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize Acadian Heritage Week (Semaine D'Heritage Acadien) to exemplify how the state’s present and future are tied to its special past and to promote Acadian honor and pride; now,

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Lafayette Parish School Board does hereby proclaim October 11 through 15, 2010 as

 

ACADIAN HERITAGE WEEK (SEMAINE D’HERITAGE ACADIEN)

 

and, that the schools are urged to observe this proclamation through appropriate activities which focus on “Celebrating Community” and assisting all students in gaining a greater understanding of the contributions which Acadians have made and continue to make toward improving society.

I, the undersigned Secretary-Treasurer of the Lafayette Parish School Board, do hereby certify that the above and foregoing is a true copy of a resolution adopted at its Regular Board Meeting of October 6, 2010 at which time a quorum was present and that same is in full force and effect.

Motion (Awbrey, Babineaux) that the Board approve all Action Items with the Exception of Items Pulled.  Motion carried.

1.         2002 Half-Cent Sales Tax Fund Declaration of Excess Reserve Payout to Teachers for Fiscal Year 2009-2010

 

Motion (Hefner, Babineaux) that the Board approve Option 3 for the 2002 Half-Cent Sales Tax Fund Declaration of Excess Reserve Payout to Teachers for Fiscal Year 2009-2010.  Motion carried.  Cockerham requested that he be recorded as voting NO.
